Beyond the Hype, The Story

Humans vs AI, or Humans with AI?

In late 2022, a number of studies were conducted to evaluate the ability of artificial intelligence to perform on human-specific benchmarks, including college-level entrance exams, Olympiad competitions, bar exams, and other similar tasks. The results of these studies were conclusive, demonstrating that AI models such as the GPT series and Google PaLM models consistently outperformed human participants in these tasks.

What does it mean for humans? Well, recent studies show two things:

  1. OpenAI release a paper evaluating AI’s potential to replace humans. In a nutshell, university level graduates are at risk, with fully replaceable jobs such as copywriting, translation, proof reading and so on: read full paper here.

  2. A Nov 2022 study showed however that, even though AI has reached human level at certain tasks, human experts assisted by AI still outperform both humans and AI. Read our post on the topic here.
